Holiday Driving Tips

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Right? Right?  Um…hello?  Ok, so maybe once the gifts are wrapped, the food is prepared and Santa has left an abundance of presents and cookie crumbs, then you can take a breather and enjoy the holiday cheer.  These next couple weeks will be hectic, we know.  It’s a great time of the year, but the stress that goes into it can be overwhelming.  There’s hope, however.  In today’s blog, we’re providing some quick tips for navigating your holiday season safely.

1.)   If you’re going on a road trip, please make sure your car is serviced properly.  Come into our dealership anytime for oil, brake fluid and tire condition checks.
2.)   SLEEP WELL.  Get a good night’s sleep before you venture into the world.
3.)   Plan your route; this will help you in the long run.  Unsafe detours can be dangerous and expensive.
4.)   Bring a paper map.  GPS is the wave of the future, but a paper map can act as backup if you’re GPS malfunctions.
5.)   Buy snacks and drinks before you leave, because stocking up at gas stations can be costly.
6.)   Tell at least 1 family member where you’re headed.  So, if something happens, you have a reliable person to get the message out.
7.)   DO NOT announce on social media that you’re leaving for vacation.  Secure your home and leave at least one light on.  This will detract burglars from your home.
8.)   Leave early.  If the common rush hour time is 9:30, leave a couple hours early to compensate for time.

Do you have any tips to add?  Feel free!  Have a safe drive and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

SHOCK and Awe: Avoiding Shock Treatment When Exiting Your Car

We’ve all been there.  You’re casually cruising in your car, glancing over to peer at your German Shepard as he soaks in the sun from an open window.  You stop for gas and begin to exit the vehicle, and you’re greeted with a quick jolt of static electricity.  Bzzt!  In today’s blog, we’re providing you with some quick tips to avoiding the shock treatment.

1.    Be cautious of clothing – fleeces and synthetic materials can increase your risk of shock.
2.    Grip the frame of the door to expel static charge – Having your hand on the car frame when you get up lets it discharge more slowly.
3.    Watch your shoes – Beach shoes with foam soles are conducive to static electricity, be careful!
4.    Touch the glass – as your exit your vehicle.  This option discharges any electricity and avoids shock.
5.    Hold a key in your hand and touch the metal doorframe as you exit.  It acts as a lightning rod and discharges the static without pain.

Static shock may seem like a minor issue for the average driver, but these tips are actually meant for your safety.  Static electricity has the capacity to cause small explosions at the gas pump.  You should NEVER re-enter your car while gassing up, as this could provide MORE static electricity build up.  If you have another tip for us, please comment below!

Full Size Remote Racing Car? There’s An App for That

We’re HUGE fans of technology. At the dealership, our lives revolve around the constant shift and change of our vehicle lineup as more technological advances make our vehicles even more cutting edge than their existing models. Like kids in a candy store, we perfect our craft, getting to know each vehicle in and out.

In today’s blog, we found out that an automotive engineer that shares our passion for cars has taken it to the next level by teaming up with a mobile phone game developer to create the first ever full-sized remote racing car driven remotely by…you guessed it: a smartphone.

As part of a promotion for the new Sony Experia smartphone Dr. Brighton, the automotive engineer, turned two roadsters into giant remote control cars.

"The primary challenge is trying to create an interface that someone can actually drive a car with in a similar manner to the way they drive the game," he said. Martin Noriander, co-founder of Pixelbite, challenged English technology journalist Hunter Skipworth to a race at Bentwaters, an abandoned RAF air base about 130km northeast of London.”

Both cars made it through the course unscathed, with Skipworth winning by a hair. "I never thought I would end up using a phone to control a car," Skipworth said.

Self-driving cars? Wow, the future is here! Tell us what you think below.

Breaking Down Your VIN Number

A Vehicle Identification Number is a series of numbers we see all too often, but do we really have an understanding for what they are?  To the normal eye, it looks like a confusing series of numbers.  A VIN is the 17-digit string of numbers assigned to every vehicle.  It can reveal A TON of facts about your car, including airbag type, country of origin, engine size, model year and even the trim level!  It’s can be stamped into a plate that’s mounted on the dashboard, near the windshield, or on the driver-side doorjamb.  It could also be stamped on the engine firewall.

If you’re looking to decipher the code, you can visit a site called decodethis.com, this site will translate the number into a readable document, changing the set of numbers into understandable content.  The information is accurate and worth a peek.  We ran a random vehicle, the result being:

The benefit of this info is using it to obtain a vehicle history report.  Before you buy a used car — even if it's from a dealer — it's important to get the vehicle's VIN and use it to run a history report that can reveal if the car has been reported stolen or if it has a salvage title.

Deciphering your VIN number is easy once you understand it! Check out our blog for details!

Quick Tips: Ideas For Keeping Your Car Running Great

Life is a blur, sometimes.  Work can become stressful as the day begins and ends with an aching neck and sore feet.  The last thing on your mind is maintaining your car’s performance.  You’re more in the realm of kicking your feet up, getting a bite to eat, and catching the last part of 2 in a Half Men.  Car maintenance is very important, so how do you know if you’re over doing it or ‘under’ doing it?  In today’s blog, we discuss ways to keep your vehicle running great.

First, how often are you supposed to receive maintenance?  All of your answers lie in a small space known as the glove box.  Every car is supplied with a maintenance schedule-in the owner’s manual or in a separate maintenance log book-that includes details that vehicle’s need to sustain long and healthy lives.   Taking a few minutes to assimilate the requirements will help you avoid the following car-maintenance pitfalls.

          Tire Inflation & Rotation

Tires should be checked regularly, because over time, they leak naturally.  Problems can arise from under inflated tires, which suckS up more gas, as well as over inflated tires, that wear them out sooner.  Plus, front and rear tires wear differently and should be rotated to even that wear.  Your owner’s manual will have a recommendation for pressure and rotation.

          Wiper Tales
Fall is the best time for wiper replacement.  After a certain period of time your wipers will be useless, leaving you prone to accidents.  Depending on location, wiper replacement may be an annual affair in the Southwest to a biannual chore in northern climates.

          Tune-Ups

Tune-Ups are almost non-existent.  Valves no longer need adjusting, ignition timing is computer controlled and there are no more carburetors.  All you really have left is the spark plugs.  These are usually good for 100,000 miles! Save 60,000 and 120,000-mile services for timing belt, and coolant.

What Kind of Car Fits Your Lifestyle?

So, you’re in search of a new vehicle but you’re unsure of what to get.  In 2013, there are so many quality vehicles out there it’s difficult to make the decision, especially if you’re not sure what TYPE of vehicle you want, the color you prefer, or if you would prefer manual or automatic.  Luckily, we’re here to help.

Most consumer priorities include:

·      Safe transport for you and your family
·      Great fuel economy
·      A price within a set budget
·      Comfortable, but stylish exterior

So, what kind of car do you NEED?

Coupe – If you’re looking for something that makes a statement and not worried about backseat space, then a coupe is for you.  These vehicles are usually sleek, and easy to maneuver in traffic.  Look into these if you don’t have small children because the lack of four doors (coupes are restricted to two) and space might prove unreasonable.

Sedan – If you have children, or see yourself having them in the next few years, a sedan is definitely the right vehicle for the job.  Having four doors and a comfortable backseat creates a nice roomy (and safe) cabin for your growing family.

Hatchback – Not just four, but FIVE doors are available in this option. These offer SUV-like space without the fuel-economy comprise of a larger vehicle.  They might be seen as a bit “cliché” but many manufacturers have embraced new, cool styles.

SUV/Crossover – These are perfect for parents with multiple children, active adventure enthusiasts who need space to harbor their equipment and individuals who need some ground clearance when navigating bumpy terrain.  The fuel economy depends on the specific model, but you’re sure to get more than enough bang for your buck with one of these.  Plus, you look luck a rugged outbacker elevated a few more inches from the ground above anyone else.

So, what fits your personality?  Let us know in the comments below!

The Best Ways to Make Your Tires Twinkle

We love our cars.  SUV’s, coupes, sedans, mini-vans…they’ve all become an integral part of our busy lifestyles.  We know that you take pride in your vehicle, giving it the routine wash, occasional ‘spit’ shine when necessary, but it’s always been difficult to clean one location efficiently.  The tires!  In today’s blog, we’ve got a couple options for you to choose from.

Spray-On

The Spray-on method is an easy to use solution in a bottle with a sprayer and nozzle on top.  Basically, you apply the spray directly to the tires, making sure to not spray TOO close.  By using a sweeping motion to cover a large area, you can achieve a nice wet glossy look to your tires.  What’s the only downside?  The spray-on sheen can sometimes leave stains on the side of your car from an outside breeze.  We recommend using it inside a garage or putting the liquid on a sponge and applying it manually.

Gel

When compared to the spray-ons of the world, a gel seems to last longer, enabling a lasting effect with tires over time.  You’ll need an applicator, and a sponge for this method.  The gel gives a nice black color to tires without the ‘gloss’ effect.  You can achieve a glossier look by applying a second coat of gel, just be sure to wait a few minutes for the gel to dry, as it could attract dirt if it’s driven on too quickly.

Foam

Foam Tire shine also comes with it’s own spray bottle and the easiest to apply.  This type also cleans off the dirt from your tires.  Just apply the foam and wipe it after it sits idle for a couple of minutes. However, be careful with some products that may turn your tires brown or yellow. Some tires really do not agree with certain tire shine products so you may have to try a new product.

Top Vehicle Innovations of the Century

Flying cars have always been something we would like to see in our lifetime, but…for now, we’ll have to settle for some really cool, helpful, innovations.  Cars have gone a long way since the Ford Model-T and in today’s blog we discuss some of the most influential technologies to date.

Fold-flat rear seats – Honda’s foldaway seats in the late 1990’s took the concept of space saving to another level.  Seats that tuck out of the way are much easier to deal with than those that have to be removed.

Electronic Stability Systems – introduced by luxury manufacturers BMW and Mercedes-Benz in 1995, this computerized system applies the car’s brakes or cuts the throttle to keep the car going where you want it.  This maintains car stability, working within the car’s limitations.

DVD Players – In 2002 Honda and Saturn introduced the DVD player, children in the backseat of minivans rejoiced.  Innovation?  Very much so.  DVD players were shrunk and fitted into vehicles, providing a smooth comfortable ride, minus the bickering siblings in the background.

Do you have any innovations you would like to add to the list?  There are countless other options available, add yours now!

New Technology: “If Cars Could Talk”…Literally

If your car could talk, besides “wash me”, what would it say? Would it ask you to ease on the brakes once in a while?  What about a nice new quart of oil?  Would traffic be smoother if cars could communicate with each other?  The Department of Transportation hopes to answer this question this summer.  In August, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to have 2,800 cars, trucks, and buses on the streets of Ann Arbor, all fitted with technologies that will alert drivers to road hazards, sudden stops, and blind spots.

“The reason why we are so excited about this is, is that this technology, when fully deployed, can address up to 80 percent of crash scenarios involving not-impaired drivers,” said, NHTSA administrator David Strickland.
Many cars use proximity sensors to alert motorists to nearby hazards, but in this case the augmented vehicles will use traditional GPS and a wireless broadcasting method similar to Wi-Fi to communicate.  The DOT has nicknamed the concept “Connected Vehicle Technology”, allowing cars to communicate directly with each other.

According to ABC News: NHTSA drivers showed reporters how the system could detect an oncoming car around a blind corner. In another scenario the system notified its driver of a car that had suddenly stopped in their lane several vehicles ahead, beyond the motorist’s view.  NHTSA said the proximity sensors in many of today’s vehicles would likely have failed these tests without having direct line-of-sight contact.  NHTSA says Connected Vehicle Technology should also allow commuters and local governments to view traffic information in real time.”

The project will cost about $15 million, with funding split between the federal government and the state of Michigan.

What Happens When You Get Your Car Detailed

We all know that when you get your vehicle “detailed” that the end product is a shiny version of your dirt laden, gummy worm sticky, dust ridden commuting machine.  What we don’t know is the exact process and precision that goes into making your car brand new again.  In today’s blog, we explain the steps that car detailer’s make to make your car a shining reflection of your ideal driving machine.

Car detailing helps retain a higher resale value for your vehicle.

Detailers start with the exterior.  This involves cleaning and creating a shine to the car’s paint, chrome trim, windows, wheels and tires. Products can include: detergents, detail clay, wax, polishes and a variety of applicators and special cloths.

The exterior paint begins with cleaning, polishing and protecting. Cleaning the car starts by removing all foreign surface particles from exterior surfaces by washing it.  Polishing refers to using mechanical polishes by hand or with a machine and specific polishing pads that remove microns of clear coat from a vehicle to remove fine scratches and swirls from a paint surface produced from improper washing or drying technique.  Protecting involves the application of a protective wax that prevents foreign matter from adhering to the surface of the vehicle.

The interior detailing includes cleaning the compartments, dash areas, windows, panels and seats.  Vacuuming is standard and steam cleaning and brushes may be used to remove stains on upholstery.

Keep that shine going!!!
